Message From the President

Jennifer Constantin, DAD President

Our 54 Philoptochos chapters and over 3,000 members are happy to report that we are thriving and assisting those in need in our neighborhoods and around the world. Some of our chapters have as few as 8 members and others have well over 200, we are a very diverse district! Those of us on the board have personally visited most of our chapters and have been in communication with all of them via email, telephone and spoken to them at events.

Social Services is at the heart of our organization, and many individuals, families and the elderly have been recipients of our care and support over the last two years. Each case is properly vetted through Philoptochos Social Services committee and/or brought to us by your chapters or National Philoptochos. We assisted numerous families struggling with illness or unemployment, aided with the Orthodox burial of five individuals, helped with payment of rent, utilities and grocery gift cards to elderly individuals, we facilitated the relocation of a battered woman with her children and offered comfort and prayer to countless others.

Besides our 20 annual National Commitments, District Philoptochos has;

      Hellenic Cultural Center Astoria, Queens

      Holy Cross Seminarian Scholarship Fund ‚Äč

      St. Michael's Home

Our National President Maria Logus challenged National Ladies of Philoptochos in late 2014 with feeding 250,000 hungry in direct hands-on ministry and to increase our membership by 5% by including all members of the parish in our good works. When the District chapters received their National challenge to feed the hungry, many chapters said that they have been feeding the hungry in their communities for more than 10, 20 or in some instances continuously for 30 plus years!

In many cases the Philoptochos chapters work hand in hand with Parish Councils, youth groups and other ministries of the church preparing and serving meals which make the bond even greater between parish organizations. We are all very proud of the difference we are making.

National Philoptochos members and sponsoring Philoptochos chapters Feed the Hungry on the last Tuesday evening of every month in Manhattan, 33rd St. and 7th Avenue behind Madison Square Garden, rain or snow! Please join us!

Parishes and Related Organizations are welcome to participate and sponsor one of these in 2016-2017.

The Greek Orthodox National Shrine of St. Nicholas has been a large part of our fundraising efforts over the last two years. District donations total over $150,000 with 27 of our chapters participating. This amount is included in the recent donation of $1,000,000 collectively from National Philoptochos members around the country.

Our Philoptochos board which consists of twenty-one ladies representing the Direct Archdiocesan District have been busy laying the groundwork and implementing a schedule of annual Philoptochos retreats, trainings, workshops and events which  provide a template for the future.

We look forward to our Third Annual District Philoptochos Retreat which will be held on Saturday April 16th 2016. Our hosts will be the Archangel Michael Philoptochos in Port Washington, Nassau County, New York. Our Retreat Leader is the Very Rev. Father Maximos Constas and our topic is "A Sacrifice Pleasing to God: St. Olympias the Deaconess as an Example of Service to the Church." PLEASE ENCOURAGE YOUR PHILOPTOCHOS CHAPTER TO ATTEND.

Our Fall Regional Meetings which were implemented in 2015 will be repeated as an annual event after the enthusiastic participation of members from more than 20 chapters. Our Fall 2016 Regional Meetings will be held on;

  • Saturday October 1st Annunciation, Stamford, CT
  • Monday October 3rd Cathedral NYC

The workshop discussions were centered on best practices needed to ensure success using all of the knowledge & technology available at our disposal. In the future we hope all Philoptochos board members will participate so that they fully understand their fiduciary responsibility to Philoptochos and its mission.
